Every tenth bread is very light

Last year, 11.3 percent of businesses sold very light bread. In addition, some bakeries and confectioneries and affiliated tearooms were not so precise about pricing information. The Federal Institute of Metrology (Metas) and the State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (Seco) closely scrutinized bakeries, confectionery, tearooms and gas stations in control campaigns last year, as they announced Tuesday.

The weights of the loaves were checked by verification officers in the cantons and in Liechtenstein. According to leading Metas, 9,000 loaves of bread were weighed at 439 bakeries and gas station shops.

Bread was very light by 14.4 percent in artisan bakeries, 10.4 percent in industrial enterprises and 5.7 percent in gas station shops. The number of faulty facilities remained the same as when the check was carried out ten years ago. The cantonal authorities are now monitoring the affected companies more closely.

One in four companies mistype prices

Seco had the price addresses of bakeries, confectioners and affiliated tearooms checked. 22 cantons controlled 1214 stores. They found missing or incorrect pricing information in 16 percent of the bakeries with tea shops. Four percent did not provide any information.

Of the bakeries and confectionery shops surveyed, 36 percent had false price signs, and one percent missed them. In the showcases, 22 percent of the companies wrote that the prices were insufficient. 7 percent exhibited their products for free.

The cantons mostly attributed the shortcomings to a lack of information on the Price Disclosure Regulation. In six cases, criminal charges were filed, often for companies failing to comply with regulations despite identifying flaws, instructions, and deadlines. (SDA)
