Swiss eat less chocolate!

Local chocolate producers increased their sales by producing more in 2022. However, while Swiss chocolate exports increased, the amount sold domestically decreased.

With Swiss chocolate in 2022, the local business still hasn’t fully recovered from the low level of the pandemic, the Swiss chocolate producers’ association Chocosuisse, organized as a cooperative, announced on Monday.

According to the information obtained, chocolate manufacturers had to struggle with the price of Swiss candy first. This has nearly doubled from the previous year.

Pressure from abroad continues to be high

In addition, import rates are high: Although 1.5 percent less chocolate was imported in 2022 compared to the previous year, this value increased by more than 10 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. For this reason, it is said that the pressure from the goods produced abroad is high.

However, it supported the result of overseas sales. Because, in general, the volume of Swiss chocolate sold in Turkey and abroad in 2022 increased by 4.7 percent compared to the previous year thanks to exports. The resulting turnover increased by 6.4 percent.

Chocosuisse unites member companies with a total of 16 factories and 4,500 employees in Switzerland. According to the association, they process about 30 percent of the sugar produced in Switzerland. (SDA)
