Germany and EU agree on burning dispute

The combustion engine dispute between Germany and the EU has been resolved.

Wissing announced late last night that the agreement had been reached. Vehicles with internal combustion engines using only climate-neutral fuels will be allowed to be re-registered to traffic after 2035.

According to Wissing, concrete procedural steps and a concrete program were determined in a binding manner. “We want the process to be completed by the fall of 2024.” Timmermans wrote on Twitter: “We have reached an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars.” Work will now be carried out to ensure the CO regulation.2-Standards for cars will be adopted as soon as possible.

The European Parliament and EU countries agreed in October that from 2035, only new emission-free cars can be registered in the EU. However, it is important for Germany that new cars with internal combustion engines filled with e-fuels can also be registered later – ie climate-neutral artificial fuels produced with green electricity. The ratification of the agreement, which was scheduled for early March, by EU countries was therefore initially blocked by Germany. Since then, the Federal Ministry of Transport and the EU Commission have been negotiating for a compromise.

Diplomats accuse Germany of abuse of trust

Many EU partners had reacted angrily to Germany’s behavior in the dispute. On Thursday, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins spoke before the cameras on the sidelines of the EU summit about “a very, very difficult sign for the future”. It’s surprising that a government suddenly takes different decisions after an agreement has been reached.

Karins warned: “If we all do this, the entire decision-making architecture will collapse.” Diplomats in Brussels expressed themselves more clearly behind closed doors. They accuse Germany of abuse of trust. (SDA)
