CS students tremble for their education

Hundreds of young people are in the middle of their apprenticeship in CS. View of the KV school building in Zurich.

Of the 17,000 CS employees in Switzerland, they are likely to be particularly problematic at the moment: several hundred apprentices. Many do business or IT apprenticeships.

Unlike employees who have completed their training, apprentices cannot seek a new job. In the middle of their training, they need to find a company that will take them and complete their apprenticeship. It’s not an easy job.

No disassembly on students’ shoulders

Bank Staff Association President Michael von Felten (62) therefore demands that apprentices not be laid off from the outset: “It should be a natural concern for both banks that apprentices can complete their education until they graduate.” To date, neither Credit Suisse nor UBS has made a binding commitment to do so. “Uncertainty is a burden for students and their families,” Von Felten criticizes.

Interested young people who have signed an apprenticeship contract with CS since this summer are already contacting the chamber of commerce. “UBS has taken over Credit Suisse with all its rights and obligations, including apprenticeship contracts,” says Christian Zünd (59), CEO of the Swiss Trade Association. “Student shoulders should not shrink. This harms Switzerland as a place of education and is a significant loss of image for teaching.»

Are other banks breaching?

UBS is currently training 700 apprentices, Credit Suisse does not provide up-to-date figures upon request. We’ll see if the new Super Bank can and will continue to offer all these training positions. “I can also imagine a switch to other banks,” Zünd predicts. Postfinance, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Raiffeisen and Co. has been flooded with new client funds in recent days and weeks. This creates space and financial resources for new training positions.

Even if apprenticeships disappear as part of the bank merger, there is no reason to fear a lack of apprenticeship. The shortage of skilled workers starts with the youngest professionals. Many companies even struggle to find apprentices. Ten percent of apprenticeship positions remained vacant last year.

Robin Villoz, 27, of the Yousty apprenticeship portal, restricts, “Anyone who really wants to KV in the club may find it more difficult now.” “But you can avoid it, for example you can do a commercial apprenticeship in the community or industry instead.”
