This won’t get you around the tax return, but at least it gives you more time to fill out. Extension of the deadline is possible in all cantons and can be done easily online: take your tax documents with you and apply for an extension using the data. It is given for three to nine months. In most cantons, the deadline can also be extended if the deadline has already expired. Therefore, you should check whether it is possible to extend the period.

Instead of hesitation, just do it. Tax returns can now be filled online in all cantons and required documents can be photographed and uploaded online. So no copying and going to the post office. The simpler the personal situation, the faster the tax return will be completed.

If the private or professional situation is complicated or something has changed radically, it may be helpful to consult a trustee or tax adviser. Many need support in situations that do not occur annually, such as large property replacement costs, property purchases or sales, inheritance or retirement. As a rule, there are still providers who take over the filing of the tax return in a very short time. But be careful: the more complex it is, the higher the risk that short-term queries will be rejected. Otherwise, the costs are higher.

There are now offers to complete the tax return for just over 50 francs. This does not necessarily mean that the provider is bad. Markus Stoll (51), tax specialist at the Vermögenszentrum Zurich, says: “Trustee and tax adviser are not protected job titles. That’s why anyone can call themselves that.” Industry organizations such as Treuhand Suisse or Expertsuisse list their members on their websites. To become a member of these organizations, certain minimum requirements must be met and you must attend continuing education courses each year. “You have to be able to trust the members of the industry body,” he says.

The price is usually calculated based on the time required. “An hour can cost 100 francs in very simple terms, up to 250 francs and more for expert knowledge,” says Stoll. It depends on how comprehensive the tax return is and what the requirements are. There are offers of 150 francs or a little less if the payroll and the number on the bank account will simply be transferred to the tax return. In more complex cases and when additional services such as extension of deadlines, individual counseling and review of tax assessments are added, an average tax return can cost CHF 1,000 or more.

In any case, make sure you have all the necessary documents ready. This saves the tax adviser time and therefore cost.

After the deadline, you will receive a reminder to submit your tax return. If a tax return is still not filed, tax authorities may estimate taxable income and assets at their discretion. “If you receive this discretionary review, you have 30 days to appeal. However, a fully and correctly filled tax return must be submitted later with the appeal,” Stoll concludes.
