North Korea has announced that it is testing an underwater nuclear drone. The new weapon could trigger a “radioactive tsunami” and destroy ships and ports, state news agency KCNA reported on Friday. The military tested the weapon system during a maneuver. “This underwater nuclear strike drone can be deployed to any shore or port or towed into operation by a surface ship.”
The “secret weapon” was reportedly launched from North Korea’s east coast and a test warhead was detonated on Thursday. KCNA reported that at that time it remained at a depth of 80 to 150 meters for more than 59 hours. The Central Military Commission ordered the maneuver to “warn the enemy of a real nuclear crisis and check the credibility of nuclear power for self-defense.”
Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have increased drastically recently. The communist leadership in Pyongyang has repeatedly threatened military escalation in the region. In the face of North Korea’s continued provocations, South Korea and the United States increased their defense cooperation. Most recently, they had embarked on the largest joint military exercises in five years. (AFP)
