This is the result of ZHAW’s “Saving life – extending lifespan” research. The ZHAW research team conducted a representative survey of approximately 1,400 people at the end of 2020.

30 percent of respondents said their old device can no longer be repaired as a reason to buy a new device. About a quarter said they just wanted a better model. Two-thirds of those who decided to buy a new device feared that a used device might have a shorter service life.

To extend the life of a smartphone, the study’s authors recommend: “The charge level of lithium-ion batteries should not fall below 20 percent and should not exceed 80 percent.” It is best to charge devices with a slow charging charging cable at a temperature between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius.

ZHAW experts also point out that 50 to 90 percent of climate-damaging emissions in a mobile phone’s entire lifecycle originate from phases other than use, primarily affecting production.
