2.5 tons of uranium was lost in Libya. “Material is not where it should be, according to officials,” the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement in Vienna on Wednesday evening. This was found during an investigation by IAEA experts on Tuesday. It was not disclosed exactly where the investigation took place in Libya.

IAEA Director Rafael Grossi, in his letter to member countries, announced that a total of ten containers containing yellow cakes were missing. Additional checks will now be carried out “to clarify the circumstances and current location of the nuclear material’s disappearance”.

Yellow cake (yellow cake) are uranium compounds in the form of yellow-orange, coarse powder. It can be used in further processed form for nuclear power plants and in higher enriched form for the construction of nuclear weapons.

Libya gave up its nuclear weapons development program under the long-ruling Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2003. Chaos has reigned since its fall in 2011, and the country has been repeatedly shaken by violent violence. (AFP)
