Switzerland can’t get out of turbulence. Reto Schmid (55) took office as cabin crew chief in Switzerland on 1 July 2016. Now, after a total of 21 years in Switzerland, he is resigning with surprise and immediate effect.
Prior to this, there was much unrest among the Swiss cabin crew. A few weeks ago, the latter rejected a new collective bargaining agreement. In an internal letter owned by Blick, Schmid says: “We didn’t manage to change the air, at least in the cabin.” He explains that the new cabin GAV must significantly improve operating conditions, prospects and safety. According to Schmid, the no in the vote clearly indicates that the goal was missed.
For this reason, he wanted to “enable a new start for the personnel” by his immediate resignation. The decision is made very quickly: Schmid is unlikely to find a new job.
Schmid emphasizes that the Swiss administration is behind the decision. Swiss CEO Dieter Vranckx (49) explains in a separate internal statement that Schmid informed him two weeks ago of his intention to take this step. Vranckx also writes that Schmid will be available for a “controlled handover” by the end of March.
Karin Wertli will temporarily take over the management of the cabin crew. The position is announced. Schmid left a “big void”.
For Swiss, drafting a new collective agreement that is consistent with cabin crew and everyone is a high priority. Schmid also hopes that a new GAV can soon be submitted for approval under new supervision.
