So this summer chaos is at the door

There is hardly anything more annoying than that: In fact, you want to travel comfortably on vacation. Instead the flight is delayed – you spend your free time at the airport instead of spending time on the beach.

Already last year there were more delays in air traffic than in the previous year: flights were delayed by 17 minutes on average, according to figures from Eurocontrol, the European air traffic control. That’s a third more than in 2019. And the number of flights at that time was even higher.

It doesn’t have to be better this year. On the contrary: “2023 will be the most challenging year of the decade,” says Eurocontrol. First of all, it will be difficult to keep delays low during the summer months.

Zurich Airport does not expect any developments

“It would be naive to think that this year will go much more smoothly than last year,” Stephan Widrig said at a news conference on Tuesday, according to “Tages-Anzeiger”.

The main problem: There is a shortage of personnel throughout the aviation industry. Workers in Germany completely paralyzed important airports such as Berlin and Hamburg several times. Air traffic came to an almost complete standstill due to the strikes. This situation also affects Switzerland.

There may also be a threat of strikes in this country this year. Because the cabin crew of Switzerland rejected the new collective bargaining agreement (GAV). Only 34 percent voted for the new GAV. A two-thirds majority was not achieved because long-term employees would benefit less from the contract than new employees. After all, Swiss pilots adopted the new GAV.

Missing spare parts and planes

In addition, delivery problems create problems for airlines. Like other airlines, Swiss is affected by delays in aircraft deliveries. There is also a shortage of spare parts.

In addition, aviation is still not completely free from Corona. Traffic volume in 2019 was almost a fifth higher than in the previous year. Despite this, Zurich Airport made a profit for the first time since the crisis.

Now everything has to go step by step – in 2025 the same number of planes will again be in the sky as before the pandemic.
