Google employees in Zurich on Wednesday protested the internet company’s global layoffs: about 400 to 500 people joined the so-called “strike strike” at 11:00 am, according to the Syndicom union.
In January, Google announced plans for layoffs worldwide. Meanwhile, this step has become tangible for the Zurich location: “Employees whose roles have been impacted have been notified,” Google said on request in a report by the SRF on Wednesday.
The company did not want to comment on the exact number of notifications issued in Zurich. However, the number of jobs affected is said to be below the world average. Syndicom cites about five percent of those affected, which corresponds to 250 people with 5,000 employees.
The union said on Wednesday that Google employees who participated in Wednesday’s “workout” showed solidarity with the laid-off workers. Along with staff representatives, he is currently meeting with Google to “negotiate an expanded social plan.” Reducing the number of people affected is also important. (pbe/SDA)
