Swiss sweets are more in demand, especially abroad

The business of Swiss confectionery and perennial bakery manufacturers’ business rebounded significantly last year, the Biscosuisse industry association announced on Wednesday. But the differences between “Zältli” and “Guetzli” are great.

Swiss confectionery sales volume increased by 32.6 percent compared to the previous year, while sales of long-life bakery products decreased by 1.5 percent.

The better selling of confectionery was mainly due to exports. According to Biscosuisse, the rate of sweets going abroad rose to 85.6 percent. Last year it was 82 percent.

Especially exports to the USA increased significantly. More than a third of the confectionery produced in this country is now sent across the Atlantic. One in five goes to Germany.

In contrast, the Swiss population also consumes more and more imported goods: the proportion of foreign confectionery rose to 81.8 percent in 2022. Before the pandemic, this rate was 76.7 percent in 2019.

Meanwhile, things were a little worse for the “Cookie” makers. The total sales volume of Swiss long-life bakery manufacturers fell 1.5 percent in 2022. However, at the same time, sector sales increased by 3.4 percent as stated.

As an industry association, Biscosuisse brings together Swiss manufacturers of confectionery, longevity baked goods and other food products.
