Facebook group Meta considers Twitter alternative

The Meta Platforms group, which also owns Facebook, is considering a Twitter alternative. “We’re considering an independent, decentralized online network for text updates,” a meta spokesperson for the website “The Register” said, confirming the media reports.

And that’s after Elon Musk (51) took over Twitter for $44 billion last year. Since then, the social media platform has been going through a turbulent period. The tech billionaire complained about the drop in advertising revenue and has now laid off more than half of its nearly 7,000 employees.

Musk has allowed controversial users from the right-wing political spectrum to return to the platform, especially former President Donald Trump and his friends. In the past few weeks, there have been several disruptions to the platform, which may have also been aided by the layoffs, according to media reports. Now Musk wants to make his employees happy with affordable housing and is building a whole city for it.

A similar alternative to Mastodon

In a statement released on Saturday night, Meta believes there are opportunities for, among other things, a place where public figures can “share updates about their interests.”

As a decentralized service – a kind of smaller mesh network – a meta offering would be similar to Mastodon, the already existing Twitter alternative. Indian website Moneycontrol, which first reported on the project on Friday, also wrote that the meta app could be compatible with Mastodon and other offerings.

Meta probably has better luck

Twitter co-founder and longtime boss Jack Dorsey (46) is also working on a similar decentralized service called Bluesky. So far, this can only be tested by selected users.

For example, Meta, which has billions of users on its apps, might be in a better position for a Twitter alternative than Dorsey. In addition to Facebook, the group also includes Instagram and Whatsapp. (SDA/kae)
