More than half a million salaries for pilots

Under the new collective agreement, Swiss pilots earn between CHF 76,500 and CHF 192,000, depending on seniority and aircraft. This makes Swiss one of the best paying airlines in Europe.

In the US, pilots bargained hard for new wages. And the airlines listened. Delta Air Lines’ cockpit crews recently negotiated a deal that guarantees them an additional 34 percent over the next four years. As the expert portal “Aerotelegraph” reports, other airlines are doing the same. For example, American Airlines is willing to do the same with fares. And with pay increases of up to 40 percent over the next four years.

This would allow flight captains of both sexes to earn up to $475,000 per year on short and medium haul routes, or about 447,000 francs. The maximum salary for long-distance pilots can even rise to $590,000 (about 555,000 francs). Almost three times the wages in Switzerland!

Pilot shortage benefits captains

Not yet under the roof. But Delta rivals – United Airlines is one of the giants along with American – have to do almost the same.

On the one hand, because the lack of pilots intensifies the struggle for workers. In this case, the momentum belongs to the employees. On the other hand, because US airlines don’t just see a disadvantage in high salaries. United CEO Scott Kirby suspected that higher fares on major airlines would lead to higher fares on low-cost airlines, thereby increasing ticket prices.

At United there is no deal in the wage dispute. However, the direction of wage development seems clear. And it creates greed: The Air Canada union, for example, complained of “an embarrassing wage gap” compared to the US.
