Swiss people prefer to buy new instead of used

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Few are willing to buy used products, as an analysis by political scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in Zurich in collaboration with the Federal Environment Agency (FOEN) shows. In a representative survey, researchers interviewed more than 6,000 Swiss people.

“There is a clear gap between basic validation and practical behavior,” said ETH Professor Thomas Bernauer, who led the study, in a statement from ETH Zurich on Thursday.

Thanks to second-hand shops and second-hand shops, used clothes are bought on a modest scale, but vacuum cleaners, smartphones and washing machines are rarely bought. According to the study, the Swiss population also shows poorly developed roaming behavior in other respects. For example, the Swiss are very limited in sharing, renting or repairing goods with other people.

Competitive and independent through recycling

This is independent of the price of the relevant good. Renting and sharing in cars and washing machines also play a secondary role, according to the study. As these more expensive products are more likely to be repaired and recycled, the gap between policy support and action on circularity is slightly smaller.

Despite the low willingness to trade, a clear majority of the population thinks circular economy measures will have a positive impact on the Swiss economy, according to the study. Survey respondents assume that producing longer-lasting products from increasingly recycled materials will make Switzerland more competitive and less dependent on imports of energy and raw materials without straining the labor market.
