Family cannot find an apartment despite income of CHF 225,000

If you’re looking for an apartment in Zurich with at least 6 rooms, at first glance you might think you’ve got Autoscout: 11,500 francs, 9,900 francs, 8,150 francs or 10,000 francs. For such prices you can easily get a used car. Zurich has a roof over your head. And tenants still have to transfer the same amount each month.

City apartments in Zurich are pure luxury for larger families. Only the high-income can afford more than 100,000 francs a year for rent alone. A family of 5 looking for an apartment is currently experiencing the same thing.

225,000 francs income is not enough

The father expresses his displeasure with the prices quoted at the beginning on Twitter. “The cheapest is twice as expensive as our pain threshold,” he writes. The problem isn’t that these luxury apartments exist, it’s that “the ‘regular’, large family flats on the market don’t exist”.

The couple earns well. A total of 225,000 francs, as your father wrote on Twitter. But the city does not have a housing market for this profile.

The family currently lives in a 5-room, 110-square-metre cooperative apartment. But it has become too small for these needs. They are looking for 6 rooms and more than 120 square meters and the opportunity to work from home for their three children.

Split Reactions

“We could and could afford to pay 2 to 2.5 times the rent for slightly more space in our 5.5-room cooperative flat than we do today. But not 5 to 10 times more, the family man tells “Nau”.

The lawsuit sparks heated debate on Twitter: some share their frustration with the expensive offers. Others think you don’t have to live with a family in the city. There are flats of any size around the city, but they’re not on the flight path or with good public transport links, Dad objects.

Tenants’ association calls for action

The family is not alone in this situation: the housing market in the city of Zurich has completely dried up. Even 1- and 2-person households often have to search for several months to find what they are looking for. For large families, the situation is even more tense. The construction of large apartments with 6 or more rooms is less attractive to investors because it can result in lower rental payments per square meter.

“The prices of the rents asked are astronomically high right now and it has only gotten worse. The above situation shows that this problem now affects not only tenants with small wallets, but also the upper middle class, »says the Zurich tenants’ association «Nau». The association calls for effective measures against high rents. (smt)
