US seeks to confiscate six Vekselberg properties

The US is serious about imposing more sanctions against Russia in connection with Russia’s war of aggression. According to documents released by the US Treasury Department on Friday evening, some Swiss-related companies and individuals are also mentioned in the package. In addition, US authorities are targeting real estate in Switzerland, which is said to belong to well-known investor Viktor Vekselberg (65).

According to a statement from the US Department of Justice (DoJ), the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York has filed a civil action for the confiscation of six properties in locations including New York and Florida. It is stated that the properties owned by Vekselberg are currently valued at approximately $75 million.

US authorities are talking about sanctions violations and possible violations of money laundering rules in connection with real estate transactions. A suspicious straw man from Vekselberg was also involved in the case, and he was prosecuted. According to the information obtained, the real estates in question were purchased through mailbox companies between 2008 and 2017.

The US imposed strict sanctions on Vekselberg in 2018 because of his closeness to Russian ruler Putin. The investor is known in Switzerland. For example, he owns a major stake in the Sulzer industrial group through Tiwel Holding, a major stake in the real estate company Züblin through Lamesa Holding, and also a major stake in the Oerlikon Group through a trust.
