Bill Gates is now a brewer

Considered a great thinker and health ambassador, but certainly not a beer drinker: Bill Gates (67). However, the founder of Microsoft recently bought almost four percent of Heineken brewery, the second largest in the world. According to various media reports, he paid about 900 million francs for it.

Gates’ entry into the brewing business was made possible by Mexican brewery Femsa, which wanted to sell its stake in Heineken. The Dutch beer giant is also well represented in Switzerland, where it owns the traditional brands Eichhof, Calanda, Haldengut and Ziegelhof.

It’s unclear what plans Gates has for the brewery. Until now, the American had little to do with beer. When asked what his favorite beer is, Gates replied in an online discussion in 2018: “I’m not much of a beer drinker.” According to the Business Insider news portal, he only occasionally grabs a light beer “to keep up with other beer drinkers” at baseball games.

Neither Gates nor his foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have so far answered questions about the beer-loving investment. Last year, the foundation even funded a study that took a closer look at the harmful effects of alcohol consumption. Conclusion: States must do more to counter the significant health risks of alcohol, especially among young people. (co)
