Young winemaker defends his logo against beverage giant Red Bull

An unequal power struggle: On the one hand, a multi-billion dollar company that owns the world’s best-known energy drink. On the other hand, a young winemaker from Sardinia with fine wines. The drinks couldn’t be more different and probably don’t appeal to the same target group.

Still, the big beverage company declared war on the small winemaker. According to the Austrian newspaper Krone, Red Bull is suing Italian wine producer Mattia Muggittu (22) from Sardinia. The reason for this is the logo that adorns the wine bottles. Two black oxen are seen on it. This is probably very similar to the multinational beverage company’s own logo – two red bulls.

Ox is a tradition in Sardinia

That’s a slap in the face for winemaker Muggittu. He worked on the logo for over a year. “I didn’t copy anything. I don’t have a bull in my logo,” he says.

It was not without reason that Muggittu chose two oxen: the oxen plowed their bonds. Muggittu does not want to end this tradition. In general, the ox can be found all over Sardinia.

They are often used as packhorses, as in the case of the Muggittu. For this, animals are castrated. This is also the key difference for a bull. An unneutered bull would be too wild to work on land. The ox is decent.

This is reflected in both logos. While the red bulls in Red Bull can show each other their horns, the oxen in the wine bottle seem to be looking back as they pull the plow.

The case will most likely end in court

There is still time until March 19 for the peaceful resolution of the logo dispute. But the Sardinian winemaker does not want to back down, he wants to stand up to Red Bull and says “I will fight for my logo until I fall”.

Therefore, the case must end in court. “We are absolutely ready for anything,” his lawyer says. Red Bull left the “Krone” request unanswered.
