Can Microsoft finally beat Google thanks to the hype AI?

Who hasn’t tried ChatGPT, the voice assistant from OpenAI? After a short recording, numerous questions may be asked about the speech generation model. These are answered in detailed and often brilliant language thanks to artificial intelligence.

ChatGPT uses millions of texts for this. It differs from a pure search engine like Google in that ChatGPT generates human-like text at the user’s request and Google provides links to a wide variety of online resources.

The amount of information Google can provide is greater. But ChatGPT is more fun. Here, the huge number of templates on the web are combined with enormous computing power, which can also take into account formal criteria such as style.

While the two systems are not yet in direct competition with each other, Google’s virtual monopoly as a search engine is at risk.

Microsoft makes a quantum leap

Because that’s where Microsoft comes in. The US tech giant is ready to invest another $10 billion in OpenAI. One billion had already been paid out as an initial investment. Why is that? Why? Microsoft is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence. And it is preparing to release a version of the Bing search engine that uses the artificial intelligence behind ChatGPT. That could be the case as early as March 2023. Bing users would then get ready, mature answers to queries, not a condescending list of links. It’s an important extension of how we currently use search engines.

A cause for concern at Google. There is already a reaction there. Google is working on a similar technology in the LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) system. Rumor has it that thanks to the success of OpenAI, Google is mobilizing more research teams to respond faster to ChatGPT.

When it comes to search engines, Bing currently has a market share of just under 9 percent, while Google has almost 84 percent.

Always higher performance

Of course, the AI in ChatGPT is still prone to bugs. Whether the market launch will actually take place in March is rather unclear. But it’s important to be first: After all, this is about the future of the search engine.

These are getting stronger and stronger. The currently used software version, GPT3, is based on 175 billion parameters. But GPT4 is already in the starting blocks. Where a real quantum leap awaits: GPT4 will be able to access 100 trillion parameters. Basically, increasing the parameters does not mean that the content will be better. But if OpenAI manages to adequately train its system, GPT4 will be incredibly powerful.

Also, OpenAI is not limited to text. Images can also be created with the Dall-E 2 system by entering text. Those who can also emulate the style or other templates.

Possible applications in everyday life are diverse. There has been an attempt to expand the pure search engine to digital assistants like Alexa or Siri that assist us in daily life. However, with limited success. The general public also did not embrace AI-based tools. However, the many tricks with GPT3 that millions of users fall in love with, even without ads, suggest that this may change soon.
