This was done by television researchers from FX Research (Disney group). Accordingly, as industry services such as “Variety” and “Hollywood Reporter” reported on Thursday (local time), the number of “Original TV Shows” increased by 40 (plus 7 percent) last year. Except for 2020, when the pandemic hit, the total number of TV shows has been increasing in recent years. It has more than doubled since 2012.
FX boss John Landgraf noted that production of fictional TV shows slowed in the second half of 2022 from the fast pace of the first six months, when more than 350 series were released. This could be a sign that the real peak of the series hype is now reached in 2022.
A number of major media companies had recently canceled new seasons for cost reasons. For example, Netflix has canceled the sequel to the expensive production “1899” by German “Dark” producers Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.
FX researchers no longer separate their balance sheets by classic TV or streaming. Statistics include only US productions and English dramas, i.e. not international productions or, from a US perspective, Netflix’s foreign productions such as the South Korean hit “Squid Game” or German series such as “The Empress” or “Barbarians”. . The list also does not include programs for children or short-form content.
