Screens with MicroLED technology are planned. They should replace previous OLED displays. Apple is also considering installing its own displays on other devices, such as the iPhone.
An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on plans for its own displays. The move will be in line with the group’s strategy to develop more parts in-house, thereby having greater influence over design and technical capabilities. The manufacturer has already replaced Intel chips in Mac computers with its own developments. Apple is planning something similar for key radio components in iPhones.
Until now, Apple has purchased its screens from multiple suppliers. These include Samsung and LG, as well as Japan Display, Sharp and BOE Technology Group.
Industry experts have mentioned AMS Osram as a potential supplier in recent months regarding the MicroLED displays that Apple is planning. High-tech machine builder Aixtron is also capitalizing on the trend towards microLEDs, which provide stronger contrasts and stronger colors and are considered a cheaper alternative to OLEDs.
