Media reports on Monday reported data outflows from 2.6 million customers from the East Asian country. In fact, data from 757,463 former customers of a local car insurance product are affected, as the insurance group specified to the AWP on Tuesday.
“We are in contact with regulators and local authorities and are about to start notifying our customers in Japan,” Zurich media office told AWP. There is no indication that customer data outside of Japan is affected.
The spokesperson said the source of the data leak was from an external service provider. According to a press release from the group, the data released includes names, gender, date of birth, email addresses, policy number and more.
In an interview with the Financial Times (online), Zurich CEO Mario Greco recently said that systemic, wide-ranging cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, for example, would be uninsurable. But the media office said the incident in Japan was not a systemic attack.
