Salt also stops the MMS service

“With the advent of smartphones and messenger apps, MMS has become less and less important. Due to the many alternatives (iMessage, Message+, WhatsApp, Signal, Threema) and the sharp decline in usage, Switzerland’s largest telecom providers, including Salt, will cease MMS service on January 10, 2023.”

Swisscom discontinued the service gradually from the beginning of March last year and completely at the beginning of 2023. According to the spokesperson, usage of the service has “decreased sharply” since 2013, when a total of 63 million MMS messages were sent on the Swisscom network. Today, customers send files such as photos almost exclusively through other services such as messaging apps.

According to media reports, Sunrise has yet to make a decision: “We will monitor our customers’ status and needs regarding this service and reassess it at a later date if necessary,” it said. Talking Swiss newspapers “La Tribune de Genève” and “24 Hours”.

MMS was introduced in the early 2000s. At that time MMS was booming, and operators and the media regularly published statistics on the number of messages sent this way over the networks – numbers in the tens of millions.
