Also, a spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of Electronics told the German Press Agency that around 100,000 indirect jobs are expected to be created. The Indian “Economic Times” had previously reported the figures.
According to the spokesperson, government incentives for smartphone manufacturing went into effect in India in August 2021. In connection with these incentives, companies will be required to provide employment data to the ministry on a regular basis. There are currently discussions between Wistron and India’s Tata Group on joint iPhone production in India and this should lead to even more jobs in the country.
Three manufacturers, Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron, produce iPhones in India for export and domestic market. Most Apple products are still made in China.
Recently, however, there have been repeated reports that Apple is looking to increasingly diversify its supply chains – particularly to India and Vietnam – due to strict corona measures in China and geopolitical tensions with the country. When asked by dpa, an Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the relevance of India as a manufacturing location.
According to a recent report by the Indian “Economic Times”, Apple now also manufactures the majority of iPhones sold in India here. Before government subsidies were implemented, most devices were imported from China.
