Tuna sold for 250,000 francs

That’s more than double the highest price achieved last year. But on Thursday, auctioneers in the Toyosu market were still far from the record price of the equivalent of about 2.2 million francs obtained before the corona pandemic in 2019. After all, this year’s auction was again for the first time without pandemic-related restrictions, as the media reported.

Weighing 212 kilograms, the fish was caught in Oma, on the northern tip of the main island of Honshu, one of the country’s top tuna fishing grounds. The achieved price corresponds to about 1,200 francs per kilogram. The fish was purchased from a wholesale company. The relatively high prices at the Christmas auction are not due to the quality of the fish. Instead, it’s all a clever PR campaign at the start of the new fiscal year that the local media reports annually. Nowhere else in the world can you eat bluefin tuna as much as in Japan.
