A total of 17,334 flight movements were recorded at Zurich Airport in December. According to the figures from the airport website evaluated by the AWP news agency, this is a 27 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Compared to December 2020, this is a double.
The busiest day was December 23, with 670 aircraft movements. The least traffic occurred at the beginning of the year with 483 movements.
In December, the gap with the pre-corona crisis level narrowed further. About 2,600 or 13 percent more aircraft took off and landed in Zurich in December 2019. Calculated across the year, the difference is still around 22 percent.
At the beginning of 2022, monthly traffic figures were still 40 percent below 2019 levels. But a clear recovery began in the spring. In the final months of 2022, values were still around 15 percent below the pre-crisis level.
Flight movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on statistics that are updated daily, with all flights recorded according to instrument flight rules. In addition to scheduled flights, this so-called IFR traffic also includes freight, business and private flights. The number of flight movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft used or its uses.
Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for December on January 12, 2023.
