EU reminds Twitter boss Musk of disinformation rules

In a video call, Breton Musk said there is “still a lot of work to do” to adapt Twitter to EU law. After the speech, Breton explained that, among other things, the online service must “significantly” strengthen its moderation of content and “resolutely” combat disinformation.

Breton acknowledged Musk’s intention to make Twitter “DSA ready”, the EU’s digital services law.

The DSA was passed by the EU Parliament last year and aims to more closely regulate the very large online companies in the EU. It will go into effect next year after the tech giants have had enough time to comply with stricter regulations.

Musk did not directly respond to Breton’s statement. But in response to another Twitter user, the multi-billionaire promised that “Twitter 2.0 will be much more effective, transparent and fair.”

Self-proclaimed advocate of free speech, Musk has fired several Twitter employees tasked with managing content and communicating with Brussels since taking over the online service. It has also started unblocking Twitter users who have been banned for spreading disinformation, including former US President Donald Trump.
