Online commerce is booming. And it creates a lot of waste. Lots of cardboard. But also a lot of plastic. Its production is particularly energy intensive and its recycling is complex. Online retailer Digitec Galaxus has also contributed to the mountain of waste in the past. For example, a simple bicycle pump was wrapped in 15 meters of plastic and shipped.
This packaging frenzy must end now. According to a press release, Digitec Galaxus is now shipping its packages in nine sizes that match the range. The environment and customers and logistics workers will benefit from this. Because: 28 percent less air is sent per parcel. This means more packages can fit in a van. And the parcel is more likely to be in the mailbox.
25 different variants
“The plastic snakes in Digitec and Galaxus packages are annoying. First, customers, because streamers can only be straightened with effort. Second, the environment, because filler also means waste,” admits the company itself. Therefore, nine pack sizes will now be introduced.
But that’s not all. Nine pack sizes offer 25 different variants. Digitec Galaxus’ staff in the packaging department can cut and fold boxes to the correct height, depending on the order. “It’s faster and less tiring than working with long publishers,” says package manager Aurel Gautschi.
Fewer airbags required
As the boxes are now fitted more precisely, the workers in the packaging department can also manage with fewer airbags. These are to prevent orders from slipping in the package. In the case of small case formats, they say airbags can be left out entirely. (pbe)
