This was announced Monday by the Federal Attorney’s Office in New York. The 32-year-old man stole bitcoins ten years ago from the Silk Road portal, which has been closed since 2013.
The «Silk Road» belonged to the so-called dark web, a secret part of the Internet often used for illegal activities. The real estate entrepreneur’s bitcoins are the second-largest cryptocurrency ever seized by the US authorities. Last February, authorities confiscated a record $3.6 billion in stolen bitcoin from a New York couple.
According to investigators, the 32-year-old was found guilty of illegally purchasing more than $50,000 in Bitcoin last Friday, September 2012. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
The man reportedly defrauded Silk Road using lightning-fast transactions from around nine anonymous accounts. The value of the Bitcoins he seized in this way has increased tremendously over the years. They were discovered during a raid on various devices at his home in Gainesville, Georgia.
