Nearly 79,000 young people aged 14 to 16 completed their compulsory education during the summer, according to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) on Monday.
46 percent of the youth were engaged in basic vocational education, 42 percent chose the general education path and the remaining 12 percent preferred a temporary solution as it is said. These are the latest results of the interface barometer that gfs.bern surveyed on behalf of SERI.
Increasing difficulties were seen in allocating apprenticeships in the accommodation and construction sectors, where 42 and 34 percent of the apprenticeships offered in August remained vacant. The apprenticeship rate given in August 2022 (86 percent) is comparable to previous years.
According to SERI, three key professional qualifications for both genders rank in the top ten: commercial clerk, draftsman and retail specialist. It is noteworthy that in the summer of 2022, 45 percent, significantly more young professionals after completing apprenticeships are employed by training companies compared to previous years (2020: 33 percent, 2021: 37 percent).
On average, young people wrote 8.4 applications when seeking apprenticeships. The shortened application process is striking: more young people reported that they started their applications in the spring compared to previous years.
Of the young people who choose general school, 79 percent attend a primary school or a cantonal school, and 21 percent attend a technical school. As a temporary solution, 9 percent opted for the bridging proposal, and 3 percent chose an interim year as mentioned.
According to SERI, the interface barometer shows the current status and development trends at the interface between compulsory school and high school level. It meets twice a year.
