In China, employees of Apple supplier Foxconn fled after the corona lockdown. Multiple videos of workers emerging from the company’s factory building in the eastern Chinese metropolis of Zhengzhou have been circulating on social media since the weekend.
You can see how people sometimes cross fences and flee the fields with suitcases and belongings. Commentators write that masses of people can be seen returning home on foot, carrying luggage and traveling up to 100 kilometers to avoid surveillance by China’s Covid app.
Meanwhile, the city government issued a statement that Taiwanese Foxconn company promised to improve living and working conditions for all workers who wish to stay. For others, regular transportation should be provided.
Destructive “zero corona policy”
The factory in Zhengzhou, where several hundred thousand people work in normal times, is one of the most important production areas for Apple’s iPhones. There have been reports of extremely bad conditions in the past few days after the imposition of strict corona measures in parts of the city.
For this reason, employees were no longer allowed to leave the building, but were required to continue working. Workers also complained of problems with the food supply. Some write that they were stuck in the compound for a month without proper care.
The Chinese economy is suffering from the fact that Beijing does not want to move away from its strict “zero corona policy”. The purpose of this is to stop any virus outbreak in the bud. (SDA/cut)
