Exports of local “sweets” rose by more than 10 percent last year to 35,275 tonnes, the Biscosuisse industry association said on Tuesday. The USA, which is the most important export market, particularly contributed to this growth. Domestic sales decreased slightly by 3.8 percent to 5,240 tons.
On the other hand, confectionery sales also increased due to price increases at home and abroad. Export revenues increased by almost 16 percent to 329 million francs, while in this country there was a slight increase of 3.6 percent to 77 million francs.
Things went a little worse for shelf-stable bakery producers last year. In 2023, total sales volume decreased by 4.4 percent to 42 thousand 756 tons. While industrial sales remained constant at 508 million due to the price increases, the lion’s share was domestic sales at 427 million.
In the statement, it was stated that among long-lasting bakery products, “biscuits” constitute almost half of the total production. This is followed by “bread-like pastries and cereal bars” with a share of approximately 30 percent, and “apéro and savory pastries” and “fresh baked goods” categories with a share of 11 percent.
As an industry association, Biscosuisse brings together Swiss manufacturers of industrial confectionery, shelf-stable baked goods and other foods.
