With a new SBB offer, car or car? Blick makes the comparison: This is the best way to reach Europa-Park

Fast roller coasters, exciting shows and, since 2019, a water park: Europa-Park in Rust, near the Swiss border, offers all this. Especially on holidays, many families and adrenaline junkies flock to the amusement park.

SBB will soon offer a suitable combination offer for trips to Europa-Park or Rulantica water park. Every weekend and on certain public holidays, a train takes 300 passengers a day from Basel train station directly to the main entrance of Europa Park. The train runs for the first time on May 18, the Pentecost weekend. A combination ticket that includes train and entrance can be booked 60 days in advance. Cost: 89 francs from Basel in 2nd class, 99 francs in 1st class.

Comparative offer

So what does SBB’s new offer do? Blick makes a comparison between trains, cars, Eurobus and Flixbus. Eurobus is the official bus of Europa-Park and is also called Rustexpress. Reservation date is May 18. The trip was calculated for one person with a half ticket card from Zurich main station.

The fastest way is to drive, but only if traffic cooperates. Especially on holidays such as Pentecost, the streets fill up quickly. This also slows down Car and Flixbus, which take at least four hours round trip. The offer of five hours round trip by train seems attractive.

Flixbus clearly has the longest journey time at up to seven hours; because it also makes three stops. The offer is also the cheapest. Even if it is not much, because this is, first of all, the entrance fee to Europa-Park, which costs a significant amount of 60 francs per adult.

But traveling by car as a single person can quickly become expensive: The cost of gasoline plus a parking ticket of about 10 francs and the entrance fee costs about 120 francs. From an environmental perspective, the vehicle shuts down with CO₂-Emissions of 35 kilograms per person are clearly the worst. For car travel, a gasoline consumption of 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers and a gasoline price of 1.80 francs per liter were expected.

If you travel with Rustexpress or the new SBB train offer you have a stay of 9 hours. This corresponds to the park’s opening hours from 9 am to 6 pm. So even if you travel by car, you do not have much time in the park. This is only possible with an overnight stay at the amusement park.

Capacity can also be expanded

Overall, SBB is performing well with its offerings. The cost of a return journey from Zurich train station without a half-ticket card is approximately 135 francs. The train also offers a few extras especially for younger guests: for example, there are board games with the famous Ed Euromaus and his friends from Europa-Park.

If the proposal is received positively, the railway company could also expand capacity: “An increase in capacity is conceivable on certain days, but is not possible throughout the entire season,” a spokesman said in response to Blick’s questions. Trips to the Rulantica water park are five francs cheaper each.
