Too much smoke: According to a study, limit values are often not observed when selling e-cigarettes in Switzerland. (archive image)

E-cigarettes of 1,500 or 2,500 puffs can usually be found in online shops or boutiques, the Swiss Association for Tobacco Prevention (EC Switzerland) said on Saturday. It is even possible to order “puffs” online with a tank volume of 30 milliliters, which corresponds to 16,000 puffs. This is 15 times the legal limit.

The standards in force in Switzerland are based on a 2014 EU directive. This directive states that each closed-system e-cigarette must contain no more than 2 milliliters of liquid volume. This corresponds to approximately 600 moves.

Made in China

AT Switzerland said the illegal products were mostly produced in China and sold cheaply and without age checks through online sales platforms. According to the research, these products are sold not only in small online stores, but also on large e-commerce platforms in Switzerland. AT Switzerland evaluated more than 100 websites.

Internet retailer Galaxus, for example, removed all non-compliant products from its assortment after the study results were released on Friday, a company spokesperson told the Keystone-SDA news agency. He confirmed the information in the newspapers “24 Heures” and “Tribune de Genève”.

Additionally, the Migros subsidiary wants to automatically ensure that no illegal e-cigarette sales are made in the future. According to AT Switzerland, Galaxus offers almost 350 e-cigarettes on its website.

EC Switzerland regretted that the federal government has not yet taken effective action to combat the problem. Cantonal chemists are responsible for checking the suitability of the “Puffs”. EC Switzerland wants to write directly to the cantons and provide them with a list of companies in violation. The cantons would have to act “immediately”.
