Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident: Part of the fuselage broke off during the flight.

While investigating the Boeing plane’s near miss, it was discovered that the aircraft manufacturer did not have any working documentation regarding a part of the fuselage that was destroyed. The investigation agency said that the company could not find any documents in this regard.

The accident investigation agency NTSB emphasized Wednesday that it still does not know who removed and reinstalled the fuselage piece at Boeing’s Renton facility. NTSB boss Jennifer Homendy wrote in her letter to the US Senate Transportation Committee that Boeing boss Dave Calhoun also said that the aircraft manufacturer had no documentation on this issue.

Luckily no one was injured

In the incident with an almost new Boeing 737-9 Max belonging to the US airline Alaska Airlines, a fuselage part broke off in the 26th row shortly after takeoff.

More than 170 people on board were greatly shocked. However, experts also noted that luckily, two seats near the hole in the fuselage remained empty and the plane was still at a relatively low altitude.

Four bolts were missing

Based on initial investigations, the NTSB assumes that four securing bolts in the fuselage are completely missing. Homendy told a US Senate hearing a few days ago that there were signs that the fragment continued to slide upward until it exploded on the machine’s 154th flight.

The committee also instructed him to report in writing whether Boeing had provided documentation regarding work on the fuselage section. It is actually common practice in aircraft construction to document job steps in detail. Boeing emphasized Wednesday that it was cooperating with the investigations.

Advert

The NTSB also hoped to learn more about the work done on the piece through surveillance footage. However, Boeing announced that the recordings are now dubbed. The company said in a statement on Wednesday that new records will automatically be overwritten after 30 days and that the machine was at the factory in September and was delivered in October. (SDA)
