High yields from the cherry, apple and plum harvest led to an average of 12.4 kilograms of honey per colony harvested in the spring, the roof organization of beekeepers’ associations (apisuisse) said on Thursday. The average of the last 13 years was 7.7 kilograms. In addition, the ice saints and cold sheep were not frozen.
The summer harvest was then slightly below average at 11.5 kilograms per bee colony. However – after the weather-related decline from 7 kilograms per colony in 2021 – an average of 23.9 kilograms was harvested this year. That’s 17 percent more than the long-term average.
Bees produced the most honey in the cantons of Vaud, Friborg and Jura. Only in Ticino the harvest has dropped a bit this year due to hail and drought. Approximately 1,500 beehives and 1,250 beekeepers participated in the annual survey conducted by apisuisse.
