Burger chain Five Guys is opening its first restaurant in German-speaking Switzerland on March 18. The self-proclaimed “best burgers in town” will be available at Landquart Fashion Outlet in Landquart GR, the company announced.

Five Guys, which has four restaurants in addition to Landquart, two in Geneva and one in Lausanne, is still small in this country. But the chain wants to step up in Switzerland; So far it is already available in North America, Europe and even Saudi Arabia. The main product is burgers with a free choice of 15 buns or toppings, readily available at prices starting from 17 francs.

This brings more action to the Swiss burger market. Blick has an overview of the most important players.

one

McDonald’s

McDonald’s, which currently has 179 branches in Switzerland, is unquestionably in first place. McDonald’s also started in Geneva (1976) and expanded from there into German-speaking Switzerland, first to Basel (1979). Although McDonald’s has been offering salads and other healthy options for years, burgers remain popular.

burger king

Burger King has 84 branches throughout Switzerland. Around 100 are planned by 2025. Recently, Burger King has been plagued with allegations of poor kitchen hygiene. Burger King also offers salads and vegetarian alternatives and remains a burger restaurant at heart.

holy cow

Founded 15 years ago, the burger chain is headquartered in French-speaking Switzerland. It currently has 16 branches throughout Switzerland, 5 of which are in German-speaking Switzerland: Zurich (2), Kloten ZH, Basel and St. Gallen. People of Lausanne rely on fresh gourmet burgers prepared with local ingredients and served quickly.

4

Mayor

Burgermeister was founded in Switzerland over eight years ago and currently has 12 branches: 7 in Zurich, 3 in Basel and three in Lucerne and St. One each in St. Gallen. Like Five Guys, Burgermeister operates in the “premium burger” sector: Swiss ingredients, fresh preparations. It recently pulled off a coup by pushing long-time tenant McDonald’s out of the restaurant at Zurich’s Enge train station.

Hans is happy

The burger chain, with its characteristic birch trunk decoration, has 9 branches in Switzerland, most of which are located in large shopping centres. Hans im Glück also focuses on quality and freshness.

Classic: “Classic”, 13.90 francs

6

Butcher

The Butcher has five branches: two in Zurich, Dietlikon ZH, one each in Zug and Bern. Luxury burgers are also served here. The chain is part of the Wiesner gastronomy chain, which also includes other chains such as Nooch and Negishi Sushi. Entrepreneur Daniel Wiesner (40) told “NZZ” burger chains are trending towards consolidation because people are becoming more price sensitive due to rising household costs, so the cheaper burger is enough for many people.

Classic: “Silberbeefy”, 8.00 francs

7

Carl’s Jr.

It has been in existence since 1941 and has 4,000 branches worldwide, but since December 2023 there is only one in Switzerland: at the Schaffhausen train station. 20 locations are planned within 6 years. At Carl’s, you can count on the classic burger grill atmosphere with table service and affordable prices.
