Flight shame? Oh what? Switzerland and Zurich Airport have shown excellent results in recent days. With 28.9 million passengers and over 247 thousand flight movements, the airport could not quite reach the highest figures of 2019. The extension of the slopes was approved by a vote a few days ago. So it’s all pallets? Blick followed airport manager Lukas Brosi (45).

Blick: The number of flights in Zurich will continue to increase this year. Do we still need to expect chaos at critical points such as baggage carousels, security checks or passport control during peak hours?
Luke Brosi: NO. Last year’s problems were especially evident in the spring, but in the summer of 2023 the situation has become significantly better. Meanwhile, our partner companies were also able to achieve strong recruitment. Zurich Airport is currently the most searched place to work on the jobs.ch platform. More than 2,000 people were hired as ground handlers at Zurich Airport last year alone.

Is it done with more staff?
There may still be queues here and there during peak hours, the situation was no different before Corona. But we no longer expect images like last year.

From banker to airport manager

Lukas Brosi (45) has been working at Flughafen Zürich AG since 2009. He became chief financial officer in February 2017 and then CEO in May 2023. Before his role at the airport, Brosi worked at major bank UBS for almost 15 years. The Solothurn native has a degree in business economics and lives in the Uster ZH area with his wife, son and daughter.

In terms of punctuality, the lowest levels were recorded in Zurich as well as in Europe last year. What problems need to be solved?
We definitely have room for improvement when it comes to delays – especially those after 23:00. To this end, we have already identified a number of measures together with our partners. We need to get better together this year.

What about the promised CT scanners that are supposed to make security checks easier?
The first two test devices will be available starting this summer. The devices are then tested for at least six months. All 26 control lines will then be equipped with new scanners. We are not the first to come here, but we can rely on the most modern technology. In this way, passengers will no longer have to remove electronic devices and liquids from their hand luggage during security checks.

Are there any other restrictions this travel year?
The bottleneck from Check-in 3 and Airport Shopping to Check-in 1 (Edelweiss Corridor) is currently closed as construction is taking place there for the new connection between the Circle and Airport Shopping. At the same time, passenger routes will be expanded and new stores will be created. Otherwise, we expect a “normal” flying year.

You are planning an innovation center at the airport. What is this responsible for?
Here we develop improvements in operational processes and passenger experiences among our partners. It is clear to us that flight operations between the airport and its 300 system partners are only as good as the weakest link in the chain.

Finally: What would be your dream destination that Zurich doesn’t currently offer?
Connection with Southeast Asia, Vietnam or the Philippines.
