Micarna employees resumed work at Ecublens.

The strike lasted five days. Today, Wednesday, Micarna employees at Ecublens VD resumed work. After the canton initiated the arbitration process, this morning it was unanimously decided to postpone the strike pending negotiations. This is to ensure that the arbitration proceeds smoothly.

In its statement on Wednesday, Unia announced that the selected staff delegation was happy to finally sit down with Migros together with the Unia union. This was the main demand of the workforce from the beginning, long before the strike.

The procedure before the office guarantees that the dispute will be handled collectively. Unia also points out that the employer is prohibited from applying any form of individual pressure or pressure against employees participating in the strike.

The first appointment at the cantonal office for conciliation and arbitration of labor disputes is scheduled for Monday. Unia secretary Arnaud Bouverat told the Keystone-SDA news agency that it was impossible to say at the moment how many meetings would be necessary.

The focus of the strike was mass layoffs

The workforce has been on strike since last Thursday to protest the planned closure of the Ecublens plant, which employs 84 people. Migros Group wants to concentrate meat processing in fewer locations, particularly at its headquarters in Courtepin in the canton of Fribourg.

Since there were no signs of easing the labor dispute, the cantonal government initiated the arbitration process. Vaud Economic Director Isabelle Moret (54, FDP) told the Grand Council on Tuesday that her departments have been in talks with the affected actors for several days. Since there was no agreement in sight, the Council of State decided to appeal to the cantonal arbitration board.

Social plan is not liked

The Unia union and the employees it represents consider the social plan proposed by the company to be inadequate. Migros, on the other hand, says that within the scope of the planned social plan, the demands of its employees can be met by going beyond industry standards.

The retailer also stated that Unia is not a social partner of Migros and therefore has no interest in the negotiations. The Swiss Trade Association and the Swiss Butcher Personnel Association, which have been Migros’s social partners for many years, accuse Unia of trying to gain political capital off the backs of its employees.
