Everything is going chaotic in our neighboring country right now. Another warning strike will be held on Thursday and Friday. As if previous protests didn’t cause enough chaos, Deutsche Bahn and Lufthansa employees are now simultaneously stopping work. Especially those traveling by train should not trust Deutsche Bahn.

Can I still go to Germany by train?

SBB confirmed to Blick that many cross-border connections to and from Germany have been cancelled. “On the Swiss part of the route, connections will be replaced by replacement trains to ensure that domestic traffic is not affected as much as possible,” a spokesman said.

The strike also affects night trains to and from Germany on 6 and 7 March. “Affected customers with reservations can contact their point of sale or the SBB Contact Center in advance to exchange or refund the trip,” SBB confirmed.

In principle, SBB recommends that trips to Germany be postponed to another time. As part of Deutsche Bahn’s special goodwill offer, travelers have the following opportunities: to use the ticket sooner or later. Information is available on Deutsche Bahn’s website.

Have flights to Switzerland been cancelled?

There is good news for those traveling with Swiss airlines. Switzerland should escape unscathed. “As things stand, we are not affected by the strike and can operate our flights as planned,” a spokesperson for the airline told Blick.

Lufthansa is currently expecting major flight cancellations, especially at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. 1000 flights will be canceled on both days. This situation affects 100,000 passengers.

Where can I get information about the current situation?

SBB will inform passengers about the consequences of the strike as soon as possible. Here SBB provides information about the current situation regarding working conditions and disruptions. You can find information about current changes in the Switzerland flight schedule on the arrivals and departures website.

How long does the strike last?

At Lufthansa, it’s the ground crew’s turn again. The Verdi union called for a work stoppage from 4 a.m. Thursday until 7:10 a.m. Saturday.

Deutsche Bahn’s protest action affects long-distance and regional transport. Millions of passengers will be affected from 02:00 on Thursday until 13:00 on Friday. Claus Weselsky, president of the train drivers union, also explained why the strike lasted so long: “This strike will last a total of 35 hours. “35 hours so everyone in the Republic understands what we’re about: 35 hours a week.”

How are the negotiations going?

The German Locomotive Drivers’ Union and Deutsche Bahn have been fighting for months over a new collective agreement. It is being discussed that the weekly working hours of shift workers should be reduced from 38 hours to 35 hours without any financial loss.

Both sides sat behind closed doors for almost four weeks without reaching an agreement. It is not yet clear whether or when the two sides will sit down at the table again. A period of uncertainty continues for rail passengers.

Another deal seems possible in the air. Verdi is demanding 12.5 percent more wages for its 25,000 employees, but at least 500 euros a month. In addition, an inflation compensation bonus of 3 thousand euros must be paid for one year. Lufthansa has so far offered 28 months maturity and 10 percent more fare. The fifth trial date, which has already been decided, will take place on March 13 and 14.
