Especially for tabloid journalists, Thomas Jordan was completely irrelevant. The stoic 1.90 meters tall man revealed nothing personal during his twelve-year tenure as President of the National Bank and always gave the impression that the only elixir of life was price stability. SonntagsBlick once described him as “the most monotonous man in Switzerland”. What seems like an insult to a central banker is a compliment. If Jordan’s possible successor, SNB Deputy Chairman Martin Schlegel, were to be associated with similar titles in a few years’ time, he would do everything right.
The conditions for this seem to exist. During an interview a few months ago, it became clear that Schlegel was far from pompous and graceless and not inclined to promote himself. He did not reveal anything special, except that he lives in the city of Zurich, has three children and often goes for runs. Instead, like stepfather Jordan, he weighed every word carefully. Therefore, journalists would probably have little left to smile about with SNB President Schlegel in their hearts. That’s exactly why it would probably be a good choice for the top job in Switzerland.
