Reaching for the liposuction syringe will no longer reduce your savings. From now on, your health insurance will cover the costs of Wegovy treatment. The Federal Office for Public Health (BAG) has been in talks with the Danish manufacturer since November. However, not everyone can use the syringe.

“We are pleased that Wegovy is now eligible for health insurance,” a Novo Nordisk spokesperson told CH Media. “Patients with the highest medical needs often need reimbursement because they otherwise would not be able to afford the therapy,” the spokesperson continued. In Switzerland, 11 percent of the population suffers from obesity; Approximately one in three people is overweight.

Price is now fixed

It has been known since Friday how expensive the fat burner is. In Switzerland, if a new drug is covered by health insurance companies, BAG negotiates prices with pharmaceutical companies. Health insurance companies cover this as part of basic insurance.

Novo Nordisk charges 149.46 francs for a syringe that is in use for a month. The injection costs 188.15 francs for patients or insurers. The agreement opens the door for the manufacturer to offer the syringe to customers throughout Switzerland. Until now, patients had to apply for reimbursement on a case-by-case basis. Not all health insurance companies support such a solution and cover the costs.

Not everyone can receive injections

So can Mr. and Mrs. Schweizer now easily lose weight without any additional costs? It is not that easy. In order for health insurance companies to cover treatment costs, a prescription must be issued, for example, by an obesity center. Patients also must comply with strict requirements, such as meeting certain weight goals.

Demand in Switzerland is likely to continue to increase. Novo Nordisk has already announced that it wants to increase production. (wgr)
