Orange boxes disappear: SBB abolishes multi-trip cards

Multi-trip and day tickets will be abolished at the end of 2025.

Public transport companies are canceling multi-trip and multi-day ticket offers. This is shown by a recent survey by K-Tipp among transport associations and public transport companies. They also announced that the orange validators will be shut down in December 2025 and then dismantled.

Reason? According to industry body Alliance SwissPass, it no longer makes sense to offer cards for stamping due to low demand. This statement is surprising. A total of 6.3 million stamp cards were sold last year, transport associations told K-Tipp.

During the transition phase, all stamp cards sold from December 2024 will have a fixed expiration date: 13 December 2025. So, for example, anyone who buys a multi-trip pass in August 2025 will only be able to use it for four months.

Children without mobile phones face problems

The removal of multi-day tickets also brings criticism. Until now, primary school children who did not have a smartphone could use these cards independently. From December 2025, you will now need to purchase digital tickets with your mobile phone. However, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office commissioned by K-Tipp, 80 percent of children up to the age of 7 and 66 percent of children up to the age of 9 do not have their own mobile phone.

Yvonne Feri from the Single Mothers and Fathers Association also criticizes K-Tipp: “Many children cannot buy tickets from their mobile phones. “It is outrageous that SBB ignores this fact.”

Poor people were also affected by the decision. “Poor people often cannot buy smartphones or get credit cards from banks,” Stefan Gribi from Caritas tells K-Tipp. Pro Senectute’s Peter Burri also said: “SBB is making it increasingly difficult to buy tickets.” (nim)
