Selecta’s boss Christian Schmitz (42) recently caused heads to shake with an entry he made on LinkedIn. In front of the public, he demonstrates his achievement of lifetime “Frequent Traveler” status in the Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More mileage program.

He thanks Switzerland and Lufthansa for two decades of safe transportation, looks forward to “60 years of free beer” and asks Switzerland to never take Balik off the menu. The fish is premium Swiss salmon, which costs about 43 francs per 100 grams.

As a lifelong “Frequent Traveler,” Schmitz enjoys permanent priority check-in, lounge access, increased luggage allowance and other amenities. It’s understandable that he enjoys this.

“Completely self-contained”

The same goes for the Selecta workforce having less fun. “Completely distant, no interest,” is the verdict of several people from Selecta, as CH Media reported.

On the one hand, Schmitz, who has been in office since 2020, has implemented drastic savings cuts to get the company back on track. About one-third of 10,000 jobs were laid off. The company culture must be far from harmonious. And despite all this, a buyer is currently being sought. Uncertainty within the company is said to be great.

This did not prevent Schmitz from completing many flights. Among other things, he is between Zurich and his former home in San Francisco, where he previously worked for McKinsey and Selecta owner KKR. And to show your status.

Numerous business flights required

According to Miles & More legislation, in order to become a “Frequent Traveler” for life, you must have at least 30,000 “Qualification Points” from Miles & More. This translates to about 150 long-haul flights in business class or 1,500 European flights in economy class, according to Ravindra Bhagwanani, 54, general manager of Global Flight. To be fair, you should add: As a Miles & More member, you can collect points throughout your life. “If you’ve been flying regularly for over 30 years, that works out to 5 business or 50 economy flights every year,” says Bhagwanani.

Interesting in this context: The Selecta website highlights the topic of sustainability; CO2 reduction is also mentioned, among other issues2Emissions thanks to electric vehicles and solar panels. The CEO flying frequently doesn’t fit that well.
