Up to 5 percent: That’s why employees in ski areas now earn more

Ski season is in full swing and mountain railways are expecting full slopes this weekend as well. This means: Lots of activities in accommodation and restaurants, packed gondolas and ski lifts up the slopes. This means a lot of work for workers in mountainous regions. Studies show that this is paid better lately than before. And: Wages in ski areas are increasing faster than the Swiss average.

This was confirmed by Ernst Aschi Wyrsch (62), president of the industry association Hotelleriesuisse Graubüsü. “Employees in the holiday hotel industry could be paid three to five percent more.” For these payments to be possible, revenue in the hospitality industry had to increase. However, ski enthusiasts are flocking to the mountains in large numbers, accepting price increases of around five percent in the last few years. The start of the winter season, when snow conditions are still good at lower altitudes, means a lot.

Lack of skilled workers plays a role

There is an urgent need for larger sales that will also provide better wages in the mountainous regions. No ski enthusiast likes to accept reduced menus and longer wait times. The ski areas have sufficient personnel this winter. However, the struggle to find qualified workers is still great and the question of how much money will be transferred to your account after the job is completed is therefore vital.

Because if a skilled worker can choose among five different positions, his market value increases. It makes sense that salaries are higher in winter sports fields. “Employees know how to make the most of the market situation,” says Ernst Aschi Wyrsch. “There are many career changers who find the courage to demand high wages despite having no qualifications for the hotel industry.”

Picture similar to mountain railways

Not only hoteliers, but also cable car operators feel this situation. Fare demands on the Flumserberg mountain railways in eastern Switzerland are sometimes ten percent higher than the usual range in the industry. “As long as we don’t have a workforce in Switzerland, employees’ expectations regarding wages and benefits will not relax so quickly,” says Mario Bislin (65), managing director of the mountain railways, firmly.

So, are winter sports enthusiasts financing their employees’ wage increases with high prices for gondolas and seats? “The increase in the costs of mountain railways affects prices,” explains Berno Stoffel (54). However, the director of the Swiss Cable Car Association emphasizes that the increase in ski ticket prices is not only due to fare increases.

Advert

As in other sectors, employers almost had to increase their salaries due to inflation. It’s not bad that railroad workers, service workers, and hotel industry professionals are likely to earn more now than they already do.
