“We need international rules for artificial intelligence. That’s why we should consider a transatlantic framework, or even better, a global framework,” Pichai said in his statement to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Saturday).
The company boss welcomed the artificial intelligence law planned by the European Union. «The Artificial Intelligence Act in its current form strikes a good balance between innovation and responsible protective measures. Pichai said this balance must be maintained as we continue the legislative process.
Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU countries agreed on regulating artificial intelligence in December after long negotiations. At the beginning of February, representatives of EU countries also accepted the proposal. Approval from the EU Parliament is still missing.
In the future, artificial intelligence systems will be divided into different risk groups. The higher the potential dangers of an application, the higher the requirements should be. Our hope is that the rules will be copied around the world.
When asked whether many jobs will disappear due to artificial intelligence, Pichai said: “First of all, I believe that artificial intelligence will create new jobs.” For example, you’ll need people asking the right questions to large language models. A brand new type of profession will emerge. But of course some jobs are being displaced. So as a society we need to work on upskilling and making sure we reskill people where necessary. We need to put safety nets in place.
