From 2026, Switzerland will have a new technological innovation: then the first hydrogen ship will sail in local waters. The motor ship Saphir will be responsible for the premiere on Lake Lucerne – together with another ship on Lake Walen, this ship is also scheduled to go into operation the following year.
The ship, owned by the shipping company Vierwaldstättersee (SGV), is 49 meters long, has a capacity of 300 passengers and has been sailing in central Swiss waters for 12 years. Saphir was built by the Lucerne shipyard of SGV subsidiary Shiptec AG. Starting in autumn 2025, the ship will have a hydrogen fuel cell system.
Hydrogen must also come from Central Switzerland, from H2Uri AG’s planned production facility in Bürglen UR. According to plans, the facility will start production at the end of the year. SGV, EWA-energieUri and Lucerne gas station operator Avia Schätzle are also recently acquired by H2Uri AG and Axpo, the energy company said on Friday.
According to the announcement, the first Axpo facility for hydrogen production is about to be opened in Domat/Ems GR. Another hydrogen plant is planned at Wildegg-Brugg AG.
Meanwhile, Norway held the world premiere of maritime hydrogen technology. Shipping company Norled put the world’s first hydrogen-powered ferry into operation on March 31, 2023.
