“It is out of the question that there will be no more therapy pools in our canton,” says Nadja Szabo (38), who goes to Blick from Glarus. Glarus’ educational consultant runs part-time the Gumpifrosch swimming school, which formerly offered courses for parents and children/babies in the therapy pool of the Glarus Cantonal Hospital.

Cost-cutting measures at Glarus Cantonal Hospital are now also affecting the therapy pool. This place is closed because there is no money. But Szabo does not accept this; he just wants to build his own therapy bath.

He plans to do this on his own property in Elggisstrasse, hence the name “Elggisbad”. But first Szabo must raise the necessary 800,000 francs. It has already collected some of the construction costs. “170,000 francs have already been secured through private donations, private loans and our own investment,” he says. A further 9,000 francs have been secured so far in an auction currently running on zaster.ch – although this amount is likely to increase.

Support from many celebrities

Among the items up for auction are a signed YB jersey, signed hats by pop singer Linda Fäh or ski racer Corinne Suter, a walk on the Flumserberge with former ski racer Maite Nadig, a meet and greet with pop singer Francine Jordi or a date with actor Beat Includes meet and greet. Schlatter includes current theater show tickets and hotel accommodations.

How did Szabo get involved? “Together with my friends, we searched the addresses of 600 companies and celebrities on the internet, wrote to them and told them about my project.” Feedback was extremely positive. Schlatter, Fäh and other figures contacted him directly.

Earlier this week, Szabo sent out another 1,560 sponsorship requests. “I’ve put a lot into it, but it’s worth it,” he says. In addition to existing private sponsors, he hopes to be able to inspire other companies and the canton of Glarus for his project.

extremely difficult

The relatively low cost of the 4×6 meter pool is due to the many charitable works undertaken: Szabo’s husband is a concrete technologist and the new therapy pool will be slightly smaller than the existing pool. Plans are already in place and he can count on free support there too.

“It has to cover the costs, I probably won’t make a profit,” laughs Szabo, who has to make tax arrangements for his project. He was able to agree with the hospital to keep the existing pool open until the end of the year.

It now hopes to offer the perfect pool of therapy: baby swimming as well as physiotherapy, Rheumatism League courses, water yoga and more. Adults should be able to use the bathroom privately in the evenings and on weekends. “I’m a doer, it’ll be fine,” he says confidently.
