Expectant mothers usually enroll their children in health insurance before birth. They hope to get additional insurance without a health check and thus avoid exclusions. But be careful: in most cases this is not even possible.
Because most major health insurance companies have now taken precautions. Comparis’ comparison of the twelve largest health insurance companies shows that: Eleven of them have clauses in their contracts that allow benefits to be reduced later. In some cases, it is possible to purchase the relevant insurance product only after the birth of the child.
“In fact, children have no chance of benefiting from flexible, semi-private or private hospital insurance, even if they are insured by their parents before birth, as previously unknown, so-called congenital defects are discovered after birth,” says Comparis health insurance expert Felix Schneuwly (63). Birth defects include congenital heart defects, epilepsy and trisomy 21.
While some health insurance companies promise a lot on their websites, service limitations can only be found in the fine print. Comparis cites Swica as the “most obvious” example: its website states that it is possible to switch to semi- or private hospital insurance up to age 40 without a health check. But when Comparis asks, they say additional insurance can be denied and birth defects are excluded.
The situation is the same in EGK. There may also be retrospective reservations in case of birth defects. Schneuwly criticizes, “The promise that there will be no health check when making a contract before birth, if there is any after birth, is misleading.”
Parents can only take out additional hospital insurance before birth with CSS, Groupe Mutuel and Sanitas. With CSS and Sanitas, one parent must also have the appropriate insurance package.
It is not possible to obtain additional insurance such as private hospital insurance in Atupri, Assura, Concordia, Helsana and KPT before birth, this is clearly stated on the website. In Sympany, exceptions can occur retroactively. However, the health insurance company also declares this on its website.
However, it is still beneficial to register before birth. Because afterwards there is no good will for birth defects. And disability insurance only covers birth defects up to age 20.
